this tincture is a concentrated herbal extract made by soaking organic dried elderberries in vodka. this is a 1:2 tincture, meaning i used one part plant and two parts alcohol, though i did so using the folk method (aka eyeballing). it was steeped for eight weeks before bottling on the october 2020 full harvest moon. this tincture will have a shelf-life of many years. each glass dropper bottle contains one ounce of tincture.
hippocrates, considered the “father of medicine,” referred to the elder tree a “medicine chest.” elderberry tincture may be used medicinally as it contains many antioxidants and vitamins that help balance the immune system. it is an especially supportive supplement during cold and flu season, as it helps reduce the intensity and duration of symptoms. my favorite use is to add it to homemade kombucha for both the flavor and beautiful burgundy color. as with anything going into your body, you should do your own research and be fully informed.
elderberry (sambucus nigra) is native to most of europe and north america. this would be a supportive plant to use in ancestral work if you have ancestors originating from those regions.
note: alcohol-based tinctures have an incredible shelf-life and potency, but it is possible for remove the alcohol before consumption. feel free to contact me for more info.
