nbcc campaign

The National Book Critics Circle’s has launched a campaign to Save Book Reviews. I’m not sure they’ll be successful. The fact of the matter is that a lot of these reviewers are out-of-touch luddites who can’t compete with all of the lit blogs. The lit blogs that include plenty o’ reviews (fade theory isn’t one of them) create a forum for readers to connect and interact with fellow reader/reviewers. Traditional print media, by comparison, is flat.
Did I mention I’m a member of NBCC?

Breaking ranks with fellow NBCCers? Good for you! I hope they listen. Critics, authors, publishers and printers all need to wake up and evolve. It’s the only way to stay relevant and needed.
Hopefully someone over there will read your post and wake up. I happen to believe in the professionalism that the NBCC instills. There are times when I want to know that I am reading something by someone who can discern crap from good writing. Having that filter makes it that much easier. I happen to really enjoy all of the book reviews that papers publish every weekend. There is a legitimacy there that is hard to find on the web.
But I’ll keep wading through crap, if I have to, in order have a more engaging conversation about books.

Good points, Trav. I too tend to prefer writing that has gone through an editorial process. That said, when it comes to book reviews, I think it’s relatively easy to find voices one can trust in the litblog community.
Ed has a great post about this latest NBCC campaign and the role of litbloggers here: http://www.edrants.com/?p=5927.

But I hope you will sign the NBCC petitions to save our book review sections because the more peeps sign, the more the biggies have to listen!
And also, if you could sign my petition to Fox to bring back “The O.C.,” that would be very cool.

Yes, I’ve signed the NBCC petition, though I’m not sure where to find yours! Let me know…
